Recently, Chamber members have reported an uptick in phone solicitors trying to sell them advertising on various products. A common tactic with these companies is to claim that a chamber of commerce or local government office is sponsoring or endorsing their product. If you are contacted by a sales company claiming the support of a local organization, contact that organization before making a purchase.
One Chamber member reported being contacted and harassed by a company called Totes to Go, while another member reported a company selling magnets and claiming the endorsement of the Chamber and local government offices. Be advised that they are not working with the Brown County Chamber of Commerce and do not give them your credit card information. Totes to Go is a subsidiary of Universal Adcom which operates several other advertising scams, including magnets and maps, across the country.
If you feel that you have been the victim of sales fraud you can file a consumer complaint with the Indiana Attorney General's Office or call 1.800.382.5516 and request a complaint form.
